Trinity County might be one of the best-kept secrets in Southeast Texas. Covering 693 square miles of East Texas Piney Woods and bordered on the east by Lake Livingston — the fourth-largest lake in Texas — Trinity County offers exceptional outdoor recreation, affordable land, and a pace of life that feels genuinely restorative. The county seat of Groveton (population approximately 900) sits near the county's center at the junction of SH-94 and US-287, a hub for county government and basic services. With a total county population of around 14,000, Trinity County is one of the region's more sparsely settled, making it a haven for those who want space, nature, and quiet.

Lake Livingston — Eastern Trinity County's Crown Jewel

Lake Livingston's western and northern shores form Trinity County's eastern boundary. The lake, formed by the dam on the Trinity River, provides boating, fishing, and shoreline camping opportunities throughout the year. Bass, crappie, and catfish are the primary draws, and the lake's proximity to Houston (about 90 miles to the southwest via US-190) means it draws significant weekend traffic. Trinity County's section of the lake is somewhat less developed than the Walker County side, giving it a more secluded feel. Davy Crockett National Forest

Trinity County borders the Davy Crockett National Forest to the west and north, a federally managed forest of over 160,000 acres. Recreational areas within the forest include the Four C National Recreation Trail, campgrounds along the Neches River, and primitive camping areas. Hunting within the national forest's special-use zones is managed by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, and deer hunting is particularly popular. The forest provides a spectacular backdrop for cycling, hiking, and horseback riding.

Communities of Trinity County

Beyond Groveton, Trinity County's communities include Trinity (a small city in the county's southwestern corner on SH-94), Pennington, Apple Springs, and Centerville Road communities. Trinity city has its own school district and a slightly larger commercial base than Groveton, including grocery stores and restaurants. The county's scattered rural communities each have their own social fabric, centered around churches, volunteer fire departments, and school activities.

Growth, Retirement, and Rural Relocation

Trinity County has experienced modest but steady growth as retirees and remote workers seek affordable land near recreation. A lakeview property or wooded acreage in Trinity County can be purchased at a fraction of the price of comparable properties in the Texas Hill Country or coastal communities. The county's accessibility via US-190 (connecting Huntsville to Jasper) and US-287 makes it reachable without major sacrifice.
