Healthcare in Southeast Texas — Hospitals, Clinics & the Region's Medical Jobs

Healthcare is Southeast Texas's second-largest employment sector. Here's an overview of the region's hospital systems, clinic network, and the growing demand for medical workers.

Healthcare is simultaneously one of Southeast Texas's largest employers and one of the most important quality-of-life factors for the region's 769,000+ residents. Beaumont serves as the medical hub for a vast geographic area — drawing patients not just from the Golden Triangle but from rural Hardin, Jasper, Newton, and Sabine counties where specialist care is limited or unavailable. The two major hospital systems — Baptist Hospitals of Southeast Texas and CHRISTUS Health — along with Lamar University's nursing and health science programs, anchor a healthcare ecosystem that employs thousands and continues to grow in response to demographic and economic trends in the region.

The Hospital Systems — Baptist and CHRISTUS

Baptist Hospitals of Southeast Texas is the largest hospital system in the region, with its main Beaumont campus and the Mid-Jefferson facility. CHRISTUS Health operates St. Elizabeth Medical Center and St. Mary Hospital in Port Arthur. Between them, the two systems handle the full range of regional care — emergency services, surgery, OB, cardiology, orthopedics, and most common specialties.

Both systems have continued to invest in facility upgrades and service expansion over recent years. See the Healthcare industry page for more detail.

Specialty Care in SETX

Beaumont and Port Arthur have real specialty care infrastructure: cardiology, oncology, orthopedics, neurosurgery, women's health, pediatrics, and behavioral health. While the most complex tertiary care may still require Houston's academic medical centers (MD Anderson, Houston Methodist, Texas Children's), the gap has narrowed substantially, and Beaumont handles the large majority of specialist needs for the region.

For most patients most of the time, Beaumont is the answer. Your primary care provider can route you to the right local specialist.

Lamar University & Healthcare Workforce Development

Lamar University's College of Engineering and College of Arts and Sciences house nursing, physical therapy, and health science programs that form the primary pipeline for healthcare workers in the region. The Lamar nursing program is a significant asset for regional healthcare workforce sustainability — and the relationship between the university and local hospital systems keeps the pipeline tight.

Healthcare Employment Opportunities

Healthcare is a major employer in Southeast Texas across every skill level: physicians and advanced practice nurses at the top, registered nurses and specialty techs in the middle, medical assistants, lab techs, patient care technicians, and administrative staff throughout.

Compensation is generally competitive, especially in a market where qualified healthcare workers are in high demand. See the Jobs listings for current openings.

Rural Health Access — The Challenge Beyond the Golden Triangle

The healthcare access challenge in rural SETX is real: Jasper, Livingston, Silsbee, Newton, and similar smaller communities have limited local provider options and rely heavily on the Beaumont hub for specialist and hospital care. Drive times to Beaumont can be 45 minutes to 90+ minutes depending on where you live.

Telehealth has meaningfully improved access, especially for routine follow-ups, behavioral health, and specialist consultations. Ongoing efforts to recruit providers to rural areas continue but progress is incremental.
